π€ Review:
I loved the concept of this story and the setting of the Engineer's Guild Trials. Ying's disguise and determination gave me serious Mulan vibes, which I absolutely adored. Her creativity and resolve made her POV a joy to read. The relationship between Ying and Aogiya Ye-yang was a highlight for me; their dynamic was strong, and I'm curious to see how it progresses especially with how it ended. AH!
However, the book leaves the story open-ended, and I felt it could have easily been a standalone if it had been edited differently. This was one of those instances where I got close to the end and was wondering how in the world the author was going to pull this together. I then looked up this was going to have another installment which made me frustrated since I didn't know that. HA!
The hint of a potential love triangle in the next book is not my favorite trope, which makes me hesitant about continuing the series. Despite this, I enjoyed the journey and the characters enough that I'll probably end up reading the next installment. It just might take me a hot minute to get to it.
